Pavilion Promenade
31 05 2010I will literally never tire of a stroll around the Royal Pavilion. The music room never fails to make me smile: as well as being the spectacular party centre of the Pavilion itself, it was the surprise heart of my wedding day.

They’ve been advertising a new exhibition, about how the building was used as a hospital for Indian soldiers during the first world war. It’s a fascinating and moving story, and a chapter of history which led to two of Brighton’s more interesting memorials: the Indian gate at the Pavilion itself and the Chattri on the Downs outside Patcham.
Sadly, the exhibition doesn’t do justice to this remarkable tale. It’s a single room, with a dozen photos and paintings, a piece of film and a quick telling of the history. As an extra if you’re going to the Pavilion anyway it’s a reasonable introduction to another facet of the building’s history.
But as an advertised exhibition, billed as something worth coming to see by itself? Admittedly the photos were fascinating but we felt a bit ripped off. It should’ve been a free exhibition in the museum and barely warranted a separate billing.
Its lucky we love the rest of the building so much…
