Run, Children, Run! The Atheists Are Coming

17 09 2010

UPDATE: I’ve had a response to my email (below) from Brighton Dome’s Director of Artistic Planning. I’d like to thank her for taking the time to respond and address the issues I raised.

Dear Brighton Dome

I just received my tickets for “9 Lessons and Carols for Godless People”, and I was concerned and rather put-out by the Parental Warning you have chosen to print on the ticket, that this show contains “Atheistic Content”. I’ve checked with the show organiser, Robin Ince, and he assures me that he did not request the warning as an ironic joke.

I wonder why you feel it necessary to warn people they might be exposed to science and reason? The show is clearly advertised as comedy and science and the title even contains the word “Godless” for anyone who might still be tempted to book tickets for a show they otherwise know nothing about.

I wonder if similarly you would warn people of Christian content in a choral concert of hymns? Indeed I notice you have a concert entitled “Brighton Goes Gospel” on 11th December, which I very much hope comes with just such a warning.

I would appreciate some kind of explanation as to who took this decision and why.

RESPONSE:

I am trying to get to the bottom of why the warning was felt to be necessary but when I heard that a complaint had been made 2 weeks ago, I asked for the line to be taken off all ongoing tickets immediately so I can assure you that this has been changed. The brochure copy is very clear to the content of the show so I agree that the additional comment was unnecessary so thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I am really excited that Robin has agreed to come and do this show in Brighton and it should be a really interesting, engaging concert. I am delighted that you have booked tickets for it and I hope that you enjoy the show

If you’re as Godless as I am, or merely have a mind that’s open to reason and scientific wonder, and want to see some of the finest comedians, scientists and thinkers available on the day, book tickets for 9 Lessons and Carols for Godless People here. There’s a few nights in London too.
