A Tale Of Two Festivals

9 07 2010

Two festivals. Two countries. Two consecutive weekends. First, I started at the daddy of them all. Probably the world’s greatest music event: Glastonbury. Then the following weekend, Roskilde with two good friends who live in Denmark.

This was my 9th visit to Worthy Farm; I’ve only missed one festival since 2000. Some have been incredible, some haven’t. This time, the sun was shining, the line-up was pretty great and as it could be my last for a while, I decided to get a ticket. For some reason, the atmosphere was particularly special: in recent years it’s suffered from a few too many lagered-up idiots, stationing themselves at the main Pyramid Stage for three days and not getting into the spirit of the event by exploring new things and meeting new people. This year, the idiot quota was lower. Everyone seemed friendly, talkative, happy and relaxed.

It’s also suffered recently from the increase in capacity from 100,000 people a decade ago. The recent muddy years didn’t help: when the site is under 4 inches of mud and water, you can’t sit down, you can’t relax.

This year as the sun baked down, people spread out. There weren’t so many crushes or bottle-necks on busy paths. Everything just seemed a little more easy-going and enjoyable. Though 100,000 people leaving the Pyramid headline slot is bound to cause some traffic-jams.
